Next to all the cowgirls and daisy dukes and whatnot, it was easy to write this off and disqualify it. There's famous case in RuPaul's Drag Race where one of the contestants was competing in "country realness" and dressed like how a southern person from his/her hometown might dress to go to the mall. You don't necessarily do well in "military realness" from wearing a camo bikini. In drag, there are different kinds of "realness," and outlandish outfits that are based in imaginative fantasies do have classifications relative to outfits that are meant to more faithfully represent actual real-life fashion - particularly in specific subcategories - like "executive realness" would be drag queens dressed in businesswear, or "military realness" would be drag queens in combat outfits or dress uniforms.
A very faithful Dragonball cosplay could also be highly sexualized and still come correct.īut from what I know about drag terminology, the issue seems to be around what a draq queen would term a "realness" - that is, a commitment to the faithful performance of a fashion or identity. But yeah, I wouldn't cede the idea of "sexualized cosplay" to lightly themed lingerie. That's all just semantics, but I think part of why discussing cosplay is tricky is the semantics are tricky, especially for people not involved in it (like me - so I have no idea if there are more consensus appropriate terms for what I'm about to talk about). Like a faithful cosplay of Majin Vegeta is still about being a man (particularly a father) and a man's sexual energy, and people would respond to this mortification of the flesh in at least a somewhat sexualized way, even if it was a very chaste sort of outfit.ĭragon ball fans in particular should understand this, since Dragon ball goes to such extreme lengths to explore the exaggerated and bombastic human form, and since it basically started as a sex farce. Even when cosplay isn't provocative or doesn't show skin, a lot of it is still about sexuality and sexual identity. It isn't really accurate to refer to any cosplay as "desexualized" - how we dress when we transform ourselves through dress is inseparable from the performance of gender and sexuality. PartnersĬosplay culture is basically a riff on drag culture - and as such it has different categories and different sorts of things it is trying to accomplish at different times or in different subgroups.
